Through Ove's preparation and his experiences during the big race, the film offers a glimpse into North Greenlandic mentality and the cultural significance of dog sledding. The film is made by Rune Bundgaard and Martin Svinkløv, who were teachers at the Boarding School Villads Villadsen in Qasigiannguit.
It started as part of a media class project where the students were directly involved in the process. Some helped with the cameras, and others participated in making the interviews. In recent years the number of sled dogs has decreased significantly in Northern Greenland. During the filmmaking process, it became clear how essential dog sled racing is to the Greenlandic identity.
It ends up being a process through which the students help demonstrate how "one of their own" carries on a historic tradition that might otherwise be forgotten. The starting point was simple. Through an ethnographic approach, and just with a very small DSLR camera and some students, the intention was to capture the experinced reality along the way.
In the end it became not only a film about sled dog racing, but also about the special warmth and solidarity among the people we met during our three year period in the village. A portrait of a mentality not often shown in films about Greenland.
